Susan Grundy did nothing to provoke the attack which took her life, she merely had the misfortune to cross the path of a rootless thug with a history of violence against women and children. The 56-year-old widow was probably killed for simply refusing to give Stephen Browning a cigarette. But whatever roused his foul temper, in his anger Browning decided he would take everything he could from Mrs Grundy. Not content at beating her so fiercely that she choked on Mens Cufflinks her own blood, Browning both sexually assaulted and robbed his victim, leaving her semi-naked and dying while he went back to the pub to spend the [pounds sterling]15 he had stolen from her handbag. The attack lasted between five and 10 minutes, police believe, and at 5ft 6in and weighing under 10 stones, Mrs Grundy never stood a chance against the burly former postman. "He assaulted her by stamping on her face, neck and head," said Det Chief Insp Christine Kelk, of Humberside Police. "We believe the attack was motivated by robbery and then subsequently a sexual motive and this is supported by DNA evidence. "He continued to stamp on her stomach and upper thigh area and left her dying. "It was a frenzied, brutal and sustained attack on a completely defenceless woman. "Susan Grundy was, according to her friends and family, a very feisty lady, but she stood no chance." She added: "They are the worst pictures I have ever seen. The level of injuries to her head, face and lower body were massive." Mrs Grundy and her husband David, who was known as Josh, moved to Bridlington from Bradford in December 2002 because they loved the coast. Mr Grundy died from cancer five months before his wife was killed. Since his death, Mrs Grundy had taken comfort from a close circle of friends, whom she used to meet every Monday night for last orders at the Prior John pub on Promenade. Browning was also from the West Riding but moved to Bridlington with his parents 10 years ago. Browning moved to Middlesbrough to live with another girl, but his uncontrollable aggression surfaced again and wrecked that relationship. On August 7, 2006, he attacked her for the final time, pulling her hair, punching her and smashing her head through a glass panel. He was jailed for four months for that assault, a crime that left his victim feeling so vulnerable she went to live in a women's refuge. Browning was back on the streets on January 9 this year and was subsequently arrested for a breach of the peace. He moved back to Bridlington on his release from court. He was estranged from his parents in Viking Road, and although he had occasionally stayed with friends in the Hilderthorpe Road area he was effectively homeless. On Monday, January 22, Mrs Grundy went out to play bingo at the Royal British Legion club in Hilderthorpe Road, joining her friends later at the Prior John.
