The Rolex Girls Junior Championship, the top tournament on the American Junior Golf Association circuit for girls, will be played at the Glenwild Golf Club in Park City Wednesday through Friday. Many of the top players on the LPGA Tour are former winners of the event including defending champion Morgan Pressel, Julieta Granada (2004), Paula Creamer (2003), Brittany Lang (2001) and Aree Song (1999). The 75 golfers from seven foreign countries and 18 states, were invited to the tournament based on past top national junior golf tournament finishes. Practice rounds will be held Tuesday with the actual tournament beginning on Wednesday. The 54-hole tournament concludes Friday. Among the top golfers are Esther Choe of Scottsdale, Ariz., Megan Grehan of Mamaroneck, N.Y., Mina Harigae of Replica Seiko Watch Monterey, Calif., Taylore Karle of Scottsdale and Jane Rah of Torrance, Calif. No girls from Utah will play in the tournament. The last four years the tournament was held at the LPGA International Champions Course in Florida. Also on tap this week is one of the top local junior tournaments, the Utah State Junior Amateur Match Play Tournament. Qualifying for the boys will be held at Overlake Golf Course in Tooele Monday with matches starting Tuesday at Schneiters Riverside, moving to The Barn in Ogden Wednesday, Oakridge Country Club on Thursday with the finals set for Ogden Country Club on Friday. The girls start Wednesday at The Barn and play Thursday at Oakridge before concluding Friday at Ogden CC. Preston Otte and Kevin Peterson shared medalist honors Friday at Birch Creek in the North Qualifying for the Utah State Am with rounds of 2-under-par 70. In all, 26 players advanced to the Christian Dior Watch Replica State Am finals July 5-9 at Soldier Hollow with scores of 77 or better. Brandan Ehlers and Nate Herzog both shot 71, while Jake Blair, Jared Humphries and Craig Woodward all came in with 72s. Ryan Pugsley shot a 73, while Tyler Herzog, Nathan Nyman and Brett Wagner had 74s. Other qualifiers included Brandon Broadhead, Tim Hennick, Matt Wahlen and Dave Loughton at 76 and Casey Beck, Lody Hale, Jordan Herzog, Cannon Randall, Justin Skeen and Joseph Wight at 77. One of the state's top players, Weber State golfer Barry Schenk, who won the Cougar Classic in April, was disqualified for turning in an incorrect scorecard. Four more State Amateur qualifying events will be played this week. Fifty-two golfers will try to qualify for the U.S. Amateur Public Links Tournament on June 19 at Wingpointe GC.
